Real Learning ensures long term change in behaviour, which enables long term change in results. “You cant talk your way out of situations you behaved your way into.”
It has been proven time and again that happy people are productive people. Psychologist Nathaniel L Branden, author of “The Psychology of Self Esteem” pointed out the direct relationship between self-esteem and productive work. Branden observed that the better you feel about yourself, the more productive you will be; the more productive you are, the better you will feel about yourself. Dr. Stephan R Covey on a recent trip to South Africa said, “If Companies took more care of their people, their people would take more care of the Company.” My interpretation of this is simply that people need to feel they are doing something wothwhile, something that adds value to themselves and to the company they work for. So many people feel they are just doing a job to get paid every month, with no real sense of connection or belonging to the company or organisation they work for. There is no sense of pride or real achievement.
Whilst there is so much more being done in recent years to train and develop people in South Africa, there is a strong focus on skills training and still surprisingly little on beliefs, values and behaviour. How do managers consistently motivate staff to perform? How do you build a strong sense of self esteem and therefore build productivity?
So what can you do?
- Ensure that all learning in the organisation is adding value to achievement of Strategy.
- Ensure that everyone in your organisation, from the tea lady up, knows and understands the big picture and how they as an individual, play a vital role in meeting the objectives of the Strategy.
- Get everyone on the same page regarding Vision, Mission and Values, and allow people to see how meeting the companys objectives will help them to acheive their own life goals. Create a true Win/Win in your organisation.
If every person working in your organisation felt happy and fulfilled, had a sense of belonging and a strong commitment to the success of the business, how much greater would productivity be? How would your customers feel dealing with these incredible people? What would happen to absenteism and morale? How much more enjoyable would the work environment be?

Very few organisations really analyse the effectiveness of training and development. Nor is there a cohesive approach to training, aligning all interventions with Strategic Objectives and ensuring the constant re-enforcement of the organisations Vision and Values thus instilling a strong sense of internal branding and a sense of belonging. A lot of companies have great communication tools and processes, and yet the comprehension of the communication is not always the same. There is a lot of misunderstanding and miscommunication happening. There is also a lot of assuming that effective communication is taking place. (A recent survey conducted in the USA found that only 15% of managers new more than 3 strategic goals of their organisation.)
Are you measuring the effectiveness of communication in your organisation? Can you state categorically the effectiveness of the execution of Strategy in your business? Is everyone working towards the same Vision and Goals?
